Impact of Digital Learning Platforms on Student Mental Health: A Narrative Review

Abstract
Background: Digital learning platforms are now widely used in education, offering flexible and accessible learning opportunities. However, increasing concerns have emerged regarding their effects on student mental health, including stress, anxiety, and social isolation.
Aim: This review aimed to evaluate the impact of digital learning platforms on student mental well-being and to identify key factors influencing psychological outcomes.
Methods: A structured narrative review was conducted using peer-reviewed studies published between 2018 and 2025. Searches across PubMed, Scopus, ERIC, and Google Scholar identified relevant literature. Following screening and eligibility assessment, 40 studies were included. Data were extracted and analysed qualitatively to identify common mental health outcomes.
Results: Findings revealed mixed effects. While digital learning enhanced flexibility, autonomy, and engagement, a higher proportion of studies reported increased stress and anxiety, screen fatigue, reduced social interaction, and feelings of isolation. Mental health outcomes were strongly influenced by platform design, instructor support, peer interaction, and individual coping abilities.
Conclusion: Digital learning platforms provide important educational benefits but also pose risks to student mental health. Learner-centred design and integrated support systems are essential to promote psychological well-being in digital education.
